Teacher Appreciation Poem

Writer's picture: JessicaJessica

This week I worked with third graders on rhyming couplets by helping them write a poem for their teacher!

Steps

  • Write a poem using couplets, or use the one I wrote

    • Older kids can help you write the poem in real-time

    • Younger kids may need you to walk through a poem that's already written

  • Couplet: a pair of end-rhymed lines of verse that are self-contained in grammatical structure and meaning

    • This was an introductory lesson, so we focused on rhyming and meaning

  • When teaching go line by line and ask the students to come up with rhyming words for the next line

  • As you go line by line identify the rhyme scheme letter (A, B, etc.)

  • After going through the poem, the students flipped the page over, drew a picture of their teacher, and wrote positive adjectives about them
