This week I worked with third graders on rhyming couplets by helping them write a poem for their teacher!
Steps
Write a poem using couplets, or use the one I wrote
Older kids can help you write the poem in real-time
Younger kids may need you to walk through a poem that's already written
Couplet: a pair of end-rhymed lines of verse that are self-contained in grammatical structure and meaning
This was an introductory lesson, so we focused on rhyming and meaning
When teaching go line by line and ask the students to come up with rhyming words for the next line
As you go line by line identify the rhyme scheme letter (A, B, etc.)
After going through the poem, the students flipped the page over, drew a picture of their teacher, and wrote positive adjectives about them
